This Diwali: A nutty circle for every circle
Krispy Kreme, the American doughnut chain, surprised us with a gift hamper of Special Dry Fruit Diwali Doughnuts. A limited edition of 4 flavours developed for Diwali – available from 5th to 27th Diwali – they consist of Pistachios & Vanilla, Kashews & Kreme, Karamelised Walnut and Almond Double Chocolate. They can be packaged in a special Diwali Edition Dozen box and are priced at par with regular assorted doughnuts at INR 70+taxes per doughnut.
My thoughts on the flavours:
My personal favourite was the Almond Double Chocolate – filled with chocolate, coated with chocolate and sprinkled with almond flakes. Despite my tendency to go for more original flavours and not just standard chocolate, this doughnut had a rich, refined taste to it. No big chunks. Just simple, rich chocolate with just the right amount and size of dry fruit.
This was followed by Pistachio & Vanilla. Even though the frosting is a vanilla cheesecake one, the rich milkiness is reminiscent of Indian (reduced) milk sweets. I wonder if it may have tasted a little more interesting and “Indian” if they used cardamom and/or saffron instead of vanilla as a flavour.
The Kashew & Kreme was a little more “standard” with a cream filling, a chocolate coating, topped with cashew chunks and drizzled with caramel. The cashew chunks could have been a little smaller but the overall effect wasn’t too bad!
The Karamelized Walnut tasted good enough but it seemed to me that it was the least imaginative of the lot. An original glazed doughnut which was garnished with cream and topped with crunchy caramelised walnuts.
My all-time favourite is their original glazed, which they also threw in a couple of! But to change things up and work with the Diwali theme, the special Dry Fruit edition makes a good diwali gift or diwali party dessert!
