“A well-made salad must have a certain uniformity; it should make perfect sense for those ingredients to share a bowl.” – Yotam Ottolenghi
If you’ve been following this blog a while, then you know that I love salad. Fresh green leafy salad, a more filling grain salad, just something on the side or even the humble Indian Kachumbar salad. I find it hard to imagine a meal without a salad in it.
But it’s hard to remain stocked with all the makings of different kinds of salad all the time. And it’s not the kind of course that has been easy to have delivered on the spur of a moment, on a whim. Until we discovered RawLeaf. Last week, on Dexter’s birthday, we decided to have a “salad party”. All of us in the studio went nuts trying to select salads from the menu, which happens to list over 50 salad recipes.
We did eventually order a whole lot of salads – vegetarian and otherwise – and shared them for lunch. We were unbelievably stuffed and barely had any space left for the special Rum ‘n’ Raisin cake that I baked for the occasion (recipe post coming soon).
What we loved the most was the packaging and, consequently, the freshness of the salads. Never before have I had a delivered salad in India that wasn’t soggy and sad. All the various components of the salad came neatly chopped and separate to avoid water loss and sogginess, dressing and toppings were packed in neat little cups.
The boxes reminded me of almost every day-time meal I grabbed from supermarkets in Europe on my “budget saver” trips – ready-to-mix-and-eat salads or bread and cheese, saving up for the night of beer and wine later! Coming back, the boxes were good quality, well sealed and managed to keep the separate items from touching each other.
Upon opening the boxes, all the greens were still crisp, the veggies crunchy and meats fresh. All we had to do was mix and eat, for a mouthful of deliciousness!
The other thing we liked about the salads was the sheer variety – the combinations and options are mind-boggling. They offer so much more than the safe options of Caesar, Waldorf and Greek (although they have those too!). There’s enough in their menu for me to try a new one every day for almost 2 months!
They even have a fairly large variety of quinoa based and kale based salads. The flavours and combinations are well thought out and the portions good – the grain based salads make a filling meal by themselves.
Some of our favourites, in no particular order, were:
Lettuce and Herb Chicken Salad, Mid Eastern Salad with Za’atar Grilled Chicken and Za’atar Mint Dressing, Tangy Chicken, Poached Fish and Dill, Kale & Quinoa Chicken with Dijon Dressing. On the vegetarian side of things, we loved the Beetroot with Feta, Kale Pecorino, Avocado & Spinach and the Assorted Grilled Vegetables Salad.
